In Biden's inauguration speach yesterday, he spoke In Biden's inauguration speach yesterday, he spoke about unity and hope in these challenging times. “To overcome these challenges, to restore the soul and secure the future of America, requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy, unity.” The speach was recieved with positive reviews. One of the men behind the speach is Biden Director of Speechwriting, Vinay Reddy.

Vinay Reddy, a senior adviser and director of speechwriting for the President Biden, previously served as chief speechwriter to Mr Biden during the second term of his vice presidency.

Born and raised in Ohio, where he grew up in an immigrant family in Dayton. Mr Reddy is an alumni of the Ohio State University College of Law and also attended Miami University. He has served on speechwriting teams at the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as for former President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.

Mr Reddy also served as a speechwriter for Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, where he grew up in an immigrant family in Dayton.

Reddy is of Indian descent from a remote village in the Karimnagar district of Telangana, according to India Today, which reported how his work with the US president had made local residents proud.

Along with lead bodyguard, Korean American David Cho, Reddy is one of many POC in Biden's staff. Despite House Veterans Affairs Chairman Mark Takano calling Biden out on the lack of AAPI representation, Biden's Cabinet nominees are the most racially diverse in US history.

What are your thoughts on yesterday's inauguration?

Kamala Harris has been sworn in as Vice President, a historic first as the first woman and Black and South Asian Vice President in American history. She was sworn in at the U.S. Capitol by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court member, in a nod to what Harris's mother used to tell her daughters, according to Harris's team. "You may be the first to do many things, make sure you’re not the last." U.S. Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, who held off pro-Trump rioters at the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, was part of Harris’s inauguration escort. Two Bibles were used to swear in Harris, writes Lissandra Villa: one that belonged to Mrs. Regina Shelton, who was like a "second mother" to Harris and her sister, Maya. (This is the Bible with which Harris was sworn in as California Attorney General and as a U.S. Senator.) The second belonged to Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice who inspired Harris to follow a career in law.

Today we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., mostly remembered for his revolutionary activism in civil rights and equality for Black Americans.

What many do not know is the significant debt our Asian American/Pacific Islander communities owes King for his work in advancing our own diverse stories and equality.

Black liberation is AAPI liberation ✊ Here are four AAPI activists inspired by King and who have paved the way for the progress we all are making, both in our #HATEISAVIRUS movement and beyond:

✨Yuri Kochiyama: a Japanese-American civil rights activist who fought for anti-war efforts and the advancement of equal rights.
✨Ram Manohar Lohia: an Indian independence fighter and political leader.
✨Helen Zia: Helen Zia is a Chinese-American, LGBTQ+ activist best known for her critical work in demanding justice for Vincent Chin.
✨Yuji Ichioka: Yuji Ichioka was an Asian-American historian, civil rights activist, and professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, who coined the term "Asian American."

Special thank you to Jay Davis who created this illustration of King. Jay is a NYC based illustrator, writer, and designer whose clients include NPR, Nasdaq, Malala Fund, and The Glastonbury Festival. Her work sits at the intersection of feminism and radicalization, a sweet spot for her to shake things up and get more seats at the table.

Filipino American nurses have woven themselves int Filipino American nurses have woven themselves into the fabric hospitals across America. Of all the nurses nationwide that have died due to COVID-19, close to 1/3rd of them were Filipino.

According to a survey published in September by National Nurses United, the largest nurses’ union in the United States, 67 Filipino nurses have died of Covid-19. That figure, which was pulled from public obituaries, is around a third of the total registered nurses who have died nationwide, though Filipinos make up only 4 percent of those nurses overall.

Now another wave of the virus has arrived. The infection rate in New York City has risen in recent weeks, and hospitalizations are at alarming levels; more than 450 New Yorkers have died of Covid since the beginning of 2021. And many Filipino nurses fear their hospitals could again be crushed under caseloads that recall the harrowing months of March and April.

Former Democratic presidential candidate @andrewya Former Democratic presidential candidate @andrewyang has officially that he will be running for the next mayor of New York City.

"I'm running for mayor for a very simple reason," Yang told a group of supporters in Upper Manhattan. "I see a crisis and believe that I can help."

One of his presidential campaign ideas, Universal Basic Income (UBI), carries over into his mayoral campaign. HIs campaign circulated a proposal for a UBI program that would provide 500,000 low-income residents with $2,000 to $5,000 a year and enroll participants in what Yang is calling the People’s Bank of New York City, with the ultimate goal of “ending poverty in New York City altogether,” according to a copy of the plan.

Yang joins an already crowded race which includes New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, former de Blasio attorney and MSNBC fixture Maya Wiley, former Obama-era housing secretary Shaun Donovan, and former New York City sanitation chief Kathryn Garcia. New York City has never had a woman serve as mayor and has only once had a mayor who was not a white man — David Dinkins at the start of the 1990s.

California's @reptedlieu has been appointed by Hou California's @reptedlieu has been appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be Impeachment Mangager for the House's case to impeach Trump with a week left in his presidency.

Repost @reptedlieu
I am honored that Speaker Pelosi selected me to be an Impeachment Manager, a role where I will help argue the House's case to convict President Trump before the U.S. Senate. Impeachment is Congress's most solemn responsibility, and this is a position I do not take lightly. I served on Active Duty in the U.S. Air Force to defend the Constitution, and I intend on doing the same before the Senate.

House Veterans Affairs Chairman Mark Takano of Cal House Veterans Affairs Chairman Mark Takano of California has expressed his disappointment in Biden's failure to appoint more Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) to serve in his Cabinet.

He told PBS News Hour that he is looking forward to the incoming Biden administration, but that his will be the first administration in 20 years not to have an AAPI leading an executive department.

“As much as I view myself as a friendly ally of this president, I think he’s erred in [that] he has chosen to exclude Asian Americans from his 15 Cabinet secretaries,” said Takano, who also has a leadership position in the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

Conversations around mental health issues are stil Conversations around mental health issues are still a taboo discusssion among Asian Americans. As we go through these difficult times, we are sharing submissions to help open up the conversation about mental health with hopes to normalize the discussion without our community and help others.

@sara.choi shares her struggles with mental health. Although each person goes through things differently, shee says you don't have to go through it alone.

"If you know someone who is going through depression or mental illness...don't tell them "you seem ok" or "I can't tell", don't act like a psycologist. Don't tell them "it could be worse" or "others have it worse". Mental illness is MENTAL illness. What you can do is listen to them, hug them, encourace positive activities you can do together and just be by their side. - Sara C.
