Upcoming Asian American Programs to Stream for Asian Pacific Heritage Month

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. With most people quarantined at home, television and streaming services are debuting new programs featuring Asian American leads. Here are a few new shows to binge watch available this month.

Never Have I Ever (Netflix) 4/27

Desi American teenhood hits screens across the country in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever. The series, loosely based on Mindy Kaling’s childhood centers on Devi Vishwakumar, an Indian American teenager dealing with her father’s sudden death on top of normal high school struggles: grades, fitting in and boys.

Hollywood (Netflix) 5/1

Some of the characters in Netflix’s Hollywood are fictional but Anna May Wong is very much real. Wong was Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star.

Watch for her in the 2nd episode of Hollywood.

The Half of It (Netflix) 5/1

Alice Wu follows up her acclaimed lesbian rom-com, 2005’s “Saving Face”, with The Half of It. The Half of It is a young adult rom-com centered around Chinese American teenager, Ellie Chu who helps a high school jock get the girl which turns out to be the girl of both of their dreams.

Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal (Amazon) 5/8

Best known for playing Jin Yang on HBO’s Silicon Valley. Jimmy O. Yang’s debut stand up special debuts on Amazon. Yang discusses Asian representation, learning English through rap videos, dating tall women and pursuing his dreams, only to disappoint his parents.

Asian Americans (PBS) 5/11 & 5/12

The long awaited Asian Americans series is finally premiering on PBS this month. The 5 hour film series tells the story of the ongoing road that Asian Americans have played through intimate personal stories.

The Lovebirds (Netflix) 5/22

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae star in this romantic comedy about a couple on the verge of breaking up who fall into a bizarre murder mystery.

The Lovebirds was set to debut at South by Southwest in March with a theatrical debut in April but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will stream on Netflix beginning May 22nd.
